Ever since June 21st, 2015, we have celebrated International Yoga Day. It is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of holistic health benefits of yoga. World yoga day is celebrated internationally with a unique theme every year. This year’s theme is “Yoga for Humanity”. Yoga has many advantages, it not only relaxes the muscles but also helps with better blood circulation, clarifying the mind for the day, and it also helps in maintain a balance between stretching and flexibility, yoga is always helpful for a fit body and mind, it also helps maintain a healthy and stable sleep cycle among many other benefits.
On this year’s Yoga Day there sparked a bit of controversy in Pakistan as there was a mixture of reactions, we received from them this year. When the Government of Pakistan took Twitter to show their support for, spreading awareness about the importance of yoga.

Some local Pakistan Twitter users expressed their criticism through Twitter saying “Following Indian PM Modi? Let us remind you that you are the Government of Pakistan albeit an imported one” was said by a Twitter user. Another Twitter comment said “Think something for the poor too. If you get time from all this.” Another comment which attracted most the attention was I think this is an Indian style of meditation, the government must not observe this day. As Muslims, we have our own ways to meditate. Kindly remove this post. On the public platform, you’re promoting Indian culture and traditions, or is this a paid promotion. Nonsense, totally absurd,” a user by the name of Professor Imran Albus said. Many people from Pakistan also expressed their gratitude towards India, thanking India for spreading awareness about yoga and its importance. In an interactive interview with the Times of India, many people from Pakistan gave positive reactions. Nausheen Khattak who runs a yoga center in Lahore said: “thank you India for bringing us outstanding knowledge of the human body”. Another person a molecular biologist said, “if you want to know yourself take a deep dive within yourself, there is no better way than yoga to do this.”
